Metro Cebu Community
Hospitals. The youngest Presbyterian related
hospital in the Philippines is Metro Cebu Community Hospital, located in
the rapidly growing city of Cebu in the central islands. It was opened in
1952 as a joint project of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines
and the Presbyterian Church (USA). The work of the hospital is understood
as part of the Christian call of the United Church of Christ in the
Philippines to service and healing.
The hospital provides curative care to its surrounding community and
offers community health programs in some of the blighted areas of Cebu
City. Dr. Eli AR. Belarmino is the Medical Director and Rev. Gregorio Yyoy
is the administrator. Among the services provided by the hospital are OB/Gyn,
surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, dental, ophthalmology, laboratory,
x-ray, physio-therapy, out patient care, neuro-psychiatric care and family
planning. An emergency room service provides care on a twenty-four hour
basis, seven days a week.
The hospital has created a primary and secondary health care delivery
system to help provide for the basic needs of the community which are
sanitation, nutrition and health care. Two outreach stations are run by
the hospital which concentrate on diagnosing and treating tuberculosis,
diarrhea disease control, maternal and child care, treatment and
prevention of malnutrition, immunization, and health education.
The nursing school at Metro Cebu Hospital is connected with Cebu Central
College. The hospital has accredited medical internship and residency
programs for thirty six residents yearly.
MetroCebu Hospital conducted a long range planning conference to outline
the hospital's mission in the 1990's. The five year plan includes
developing into a tertiary care hospital, increasing bed space to 345 and
making health care available to lower and middle income people. The
hospital plans to expand its outreach programs and to make these programs
more sensitive to the needs of the poor people in the community.
