The present Cebu Normal University was
originally a Cebu Normal School which started as a secondary normal school
in 1915 as an adjunct to Cebu Provincial High School, offering a two year
secondary curriculum for its third and fourth year students.
In June 1924, it opened its doors as a secondary normal school, offering
the four year secondary normal curriculum until 1935.
The four year secondary normal curriculum was changed to two year college
curriculum in June 1936 until 1941 when the World War II broke out.
In 1946, it adopted a two year general curriculum which was changed into a
four year Elementary Teacher Education Curriculum in 1952.
In 1954 the Bachelor of Science in Education was introduced, authorized
under R.A. 975 and in 1959 the Four-Year General Elementary Teacher
Education Curriculum (BSEED).
In 1960, Cebu Normal School opened its Graduate Studies in conformity with
R.A. 975.
In 1967, Cebu Normal School gained college status under the name Cebu
Normal College by virtue of R.A. 5128 and BPS Memo. No. 79, s. 1967.
On June 14, 1976, P.D. 944 converted Cebu Normal College into a chartered
State College . Its charter authorized the college to offer courses other
than education and also offer advance degrees namely: Doctor of Education,
Doctor of Public Administration and other academic programs relevant to
the training of teachers, administrators and employees of public and
private entities.
On June 27, 1998, Cebu State College was converted into Cebu Normal
University by virtue of R.A. 8688.
MISSION-VISION
The Cebu Normal University, a state institution of academic tradition,
strives to uphold the ethic of excellence in instruction, research,
extension and production in the undergraduate and advanced professional
studies for development vital to globalization
UNIVERSITY GOAL & OBJECTIVES
The Cebu Normal University in extolling academic excellence as its major
thrust in the academe, shares with other state institutions of higher
learning its fundamental four-fold function. These basic functions are
carried out through the following objectives.
A. Instruction
1. To provide a well-rounded liberal education characterized by a
functional knowledege of language, the arts, the natural and social
sciences for regional, national development and international
understanding.
2. To provide an academic community that affords optimum learning
opportunities in the development of skills fundamental to the practice of
professions;
3. To promote constructive, dynamic, innovative leadership programs
through varied and meaningful institutions and commmunity activities
essential to the optimum development of the personality;
4. To turn over quality graduates who will carry on the tradition of
dedicated service and academic excellence.
B. Planning and Research
1. To develop among the constituents research capabilities and potentials
vital to institutional development;
2. To undertake research programs, projects along institutional needs and
problems, technological challenges and government thrusts;
3. To utilize research-based information for the improvement of
institutional plans, programs and projects.
C. Community Extension Services
1. To evolve extension plans and programs along areas that would
contribute to the well being of the people in the service area;
2. To develop numeracy, literacy and livelihood skills of the
out-of-school that are essential to the economy of the Region;
3. To collaborate with other socio-civic agencies in the development of
depressed communities along literacy and occupational skills.
