University of the Visayas established
in 1919 as Visayan Institute. It's philosophy, amor servitum humanitas
promotes the development of love, leadership, and service. Its mission is
to provide educational opportunity to all, especially the poor but
deserving members of the community. The university has five accredited
programs by the Philippine, Association of Colleges and Universities -
Commission on Accreditation, namely: Arts and Sciences, Commerce, and
Education-reaccredited Level III; and Nursing and Maritime Programs-Level
II. Last October 1, 1998 the institution applied for ISO 9001
certification. Its quality system manuals passed documentary review last
February 26, 1999.
Significant Contribution of the Organization to the Development of its
Beneficiaries/Clientele It pioneered to the "study now pay later plan" in
1965 to 1975 for poor but deserving student. This was supplanted by the
Inday Pining Grants to the Disabled, and poor but deserving students. In
The last five years approximately 5,103 scholars benefited from this
scholarship grant. Other grants include Vicente Gullas grants for all
ordinary government employees, public school teachers and administrators,
military dependents and personnel with a total value of P8.5 million every
semester.
Lately, it institutionalized its public employment office (PESO), which
provides placement and job training to UV graduates and graduates of other
educational institutions. Since its establishment PESO has provided
employment to more than 1000 applicants.
Founded in 1919 this is the oldest university in the Visayas. UV offers
courses in Business Administration, Engineering including Marine
Engineering & Medicine at the Gullas College of Medicine. The University
of the Visayas maritime department has gained recognition by international
accrediting bodies such as Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for BS EN ISO
9001:1994 and the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). They are
duly recognized by the Philippines Commission on Higher Education (CHED),
Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), Maritime Training Council (MTC) and
the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
